PSLERiordan had 2.9 m of thread. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the thread did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of d.
- If d = 25, how much of the thread was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of thread used
= d + d + d + (3d - 9) + (d + 19)
= d + d + d + 3d + d - 9 + 19
= (7 d + 10) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
2.9 m = 290 cm
Total length of thread used if d = 25
= 7 d + 10
= 7(25) + 10
= 175 + 10
= 185 cm
Total length of thread not used
= 290 - 185
= 105 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
105 cm = 1.05 m
Answer(s): (a) (7d + 10) cm; (b) 1.05 m
