Secondly, the foot of the eighth chair was 40.6 cm above that of the first. Thirdly, the chairs reached a height of 172.5 cm. What is the height of each chair?
Number of chairs that contributed to the height of 40.6 cm above the first chair
= 8 - 1
= 7

Height increase with each additional stacked chair
= 40.6 ÷ 7
= 5.8 cm

Number of chairs stacked on top of the first chair
= 14 - 1
= 13

Height increase of 13 additional stacked chairs
= 13 x 5.8
= 75.4 cm

Height of one chair
= 172.5 - 75.4
= 97.1 cm
