A rectangular tank measuring 56 cm by 50 cm by 37 cm was filled with water to a height of 28 cm at first. After 7 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 32 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 32 - 28
= 4 cm
Total volume of water added
= 50 x 56 x 4
= 11200 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 11200 ÷ 7
= 1600 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 7 jugs of water were poured in
= 37 - 32
= 5 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 50 x 56 x 5
= 14000 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
14000 cm
3 = 14 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1600 cm
3; (b) 14 ℓ
