At a farm, there were
59 as many ducks and geese. The farmer added another 23 ducks but sold away 40 geese. In the end, there were 9 geese more than ducks. How many ducks and geese were there altogether in the end?

Ducks |
Geese |
Before |
5 u |
9 u |
Change |
+ 23 |
- 40 |
After |
5 u + 23 |
9 u - 40 |
If the farmer had another 9 ducks in the end, the number of ducks and (chickens) would be the same.
9 u - 40 = 5 u + 23 + 9
9 u - 5 u = 32 + 40
4 u = 72
1 u = 72 ÷ 4 = 18
Number of geese and ducks in the end
= 5 u + 23 + 9 u - 40
= 5 u + 9 u + 23 - 40
= 14 u - 17
= 14 x 18 - 17
= 235
