A fruit stall sold avocados at 70¢ and mandarin oranges at 40¢ each. Kathy bought some avocados and Dana bought some mandarin oranges from the stall. Kathy spent $0.80 more than Dana, but had 4 fruits fewer than Dana.

1. How many avocados did Kathy buy?
2. How much did Dana spend on the mandarin oranges?

Number of avocados that Kathy bought = 1 u
Number of mandarin oranges that Dana bought = 1 u + 4

Amount that Kathy paid = 0.7 x 1 u = 0.7 u
Amount that Dana paid = 0.4(1 u + 4) = 0.4 u + 1.6

If Dana spent another $0.80, both Dana and Kathy would spend the same amount.

0.7 u = 0.4 u + 1.6 + 0.8
0.7 u - 0.4 u = 1.6 + 0.8
0.3 u = 2.4

1 u = 2.4 ÷ 0.3 = 8

Number of avocados that Kathy bought
= 1 u
= 8

Amount that Dana spent on the mandarin oranges
= 0.4 u + 1.6
= 0.4 x 8 + 1.6
= 3.2 + 1.6
= $4.80
