PSLE Yen had a rectangular piece of paper, 66 cm by 33.8 cm. She cut out as many squares as possible from the paper. The side of each square was 3 cm.
- How many squares did Yen cut out?
- What area of the paper was left?
(a)
Number of squares that can be cut out breadthwise
= 33.8 ÷ 3
= 11 r 0.8
Number of squares that can be cut out lengthwise
= 66 ÷ 3
= 22 r 0
Total number of squares
= 22 x 11
= 242
(b)
Remaining breadth of the paper left = 0.8 cm
Area of the paper left
= 66 x 0.8
= 52.8 cm
2 Answer(s): (a) 242; (b) 52.8 cm
