Michael and Lee were paid a total of $1960 for a job they did. Lee was paid $1160 less than Michael.

1. How much was Lee paid for the job?
2. Michael and Lee were paid based on the number of days they worked. Michael worked 3 times as many days as Lee. Michael was paid $20 more than Lee per day. How many days did Michael work?

Amount that Lee was paid = 1 u
Amount that Michael was paid = 1 u + 1160

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1160
= 2 u + 1160

2 u + 1160 = 1960
2 u = 1960 - 1160
2 u = 800

1 u = 800 ÷ 2 = 400

Amount that Lee was paid
= 1 u
= $400

(b)
Amount that Michael was paid
= 1 u + 1160
= 400 + 1160
= $1560

Michael worked 3 times as many days as Lee.

3 sets of Michael's salary = $1560

1 set of Michael's salary
= 1560 ÷ 3
= $520

1 set of Lee's salary = $400

Difference between each set of Michael's and Lee's salaries
= 520 - 400
= $120

Number of days in 1 set
= 120 ÷ 20
= 6

Number of days that Michael worked
= 3 x 6
= 18
