Xavier and Howard each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Xavier filled up 7 bottles and had 7.6 ℓ of water left. Howard filled up 5 bottles and had 9 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Xavier and Howard had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 7 - 5
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 9 - 7.6
= 1.4 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 1.4 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.4 ÷ 2
= 0.7 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.7 ℓ = 0.7 x 1000 = 700 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 5 bottles
= 5 x 0.7
= 3.5 ℓ
Volume of water that Howard had at first
= 3.5 + 9
= 12.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Xavier and Howard had at first
= 2 x 12.5
= 25 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 700 mℓ (b) 25 ℓ
