Owen and Carl each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Owen filled up 12 bottles and had 7 ℓ of water left. Carl filled up 10 bottles and had 8 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Owen and Carl had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 12 - 10
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 8 - 7
= 1 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 1 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1 ÷ 2
= 0.5 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.5 ℓ = 0.5 x 1000 = 500 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 10 bottles
= 10 x 0.5
= 5 ℓ
Volume of water that Carl had at first
= 5 + 8
= 13 ℓ
Total volume of water that Owen and Carl had at first
= 2 x 13
= 26 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 500 mℓ (b) 26 ℓ
