Peter and Valen each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Peter filled up 10 bottles and had 13 ℓ of water left. Valen filled up 8 bottles and had 13.4 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Peter and Valen had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 10 - 8
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 13.4 - 13
= 0.4 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 0.4 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 0.4 ÷ 2
= 0.2 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.2 ℓ = 0.2 x 1000 = 200 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 8 bottles
= 8 x 0.2
= 1.6 ℓ
Volume of water that Valen had at first
= 1.6 + 13.4
= 15 ℓ
Total volume of water that Peter and Valen had at first
= 2 x 15
= 30 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 200 mℓ (b) 30 ℓ
