67 of the chocolate bars into 18 blue bags and the rest into 24 violet bags. There were 40 chocolate bars altogether in 1 blue and 2 violet bags. How many chocolate bars did Gillian have at first?

Let 1 B be 1 blue bag.
Let 1 V be 1 violet bag.
6 u = 18 B
1 u = 3 B --- (1)
1 u = 24 V --- (2)
(1) = (2)
3 B = 24 V
1 B = 24 ÷ 3 = 8 V
1 B + 2 V = 40 --- (3)
Substitute 1 B = 8 V into (3).
8 V + 2 V = 40
10 V = 40
1 V = 40 ÷ 10 = 4

1 u = 24 V
1 u = 24 x 4 = 96
Number of chocolate bars that Gillian had at first
= 6 u + 1 u
= 7 u
= 7 x 96
