45 of the lollipops into 12 blue bags and the rest into 9 violet bags. There were 10 lollipops altogether in 1 blue and 2 violet bags. How many lollipops did Linda have at first?

Let 1 B be 1 blue bag.
Let 1 V be 1 violet bag.
4 u = 12 B
1 u = 3 B --- (1)
1 u = 9 V --- (2)
(1) = (2)
3 B = 9 V
1 B = 9 ÷ 3 = 3 V
1 B + 2 V = 10 --- (3)
Substitute 1 B = 3 V into (3).
3 V + 2 V = 10
5 V = 10
1 V = 10 ÷ 5 = 2
From (2)
1 u = 9 V
1 u = 9 x 2 = 18
Number of lollipops that Linda had at first
= 4 u + 1 u
= 5 u
= 5 x 18
= 90
