56 of the candy sticks into 10 blue bags and the rest into 12 violet bags. There were 40 candy sticks altogether in 1 blue and 2 violet bags. How many candy sticks did Usha have at first?

Let 1 B be 1 blue bag.
Let 1 V be 1 violet bag.
5 u = 10 B
1 u = 2 B --- (1)
1 u = 12 V --- (2)
(1) = (2)
2 B = 12 V
1 B = 12 ÷ 2 = 6 V
1 B + 2 V = 40 --- (3)
Substitute 1 B = 6 V into (3).
6 V + 2 V = 40
8 V = 40
1 V = 40 ÷ 8 = 5
From (2)
1 u = 12 V
1 u = 12 x 5 = 60
Number of candy sticks that Usha had at first
= 5 u + 1 u
= 6 u
= 6 x 60
= 360
