45 of the chocolate bars into 8 blue bags and the rest into 30 violet bags. There were 36 chocolate bars altogether in 1 blue and 3 violet bags. How many chocolate bars did Emily have at first?

Let 1 B be 1 blue bag.
Let 1 V be 1 violet bag.
4 u = 8 B
1 u = 2 B --- (1)
1 u = 30 V --- (2)
(1) = (2)
2 B = 30 V
1 B = 30 ÷ 2 = 15 V
1 B + 3 V = 36 --- (3)
Substitute 1 B = 15 V into (3).
15 V + 3 V = 36
18 V = 36
1 V = 36 ÷ 18 = 2

1 u = 30 V
1 u = 30 x 2 = 60
Number of chocolate bars that Emily had at first
= 4 u + 1 u
= 5 u
= 5 x 60
= 300
