PSLEXavier had 3.8 m of thread. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the thread did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of h.
- If h = 16, how much of the thread was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of thread used
= h + h + h + (3h - 6) + (h + 17)
= h + h + h + 3h + h - 6 + 17
= (7 h + 11) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
3.8 m = 380 cm
Total length of thread used if h = 16
= 7 h + 11
= 7(16) + 11
= 112 + 11
= 123 cm
Total length of thread not used
= 380 - 123
= 257 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
257 cm = 2.57 m
Answer(s): (a) (7h + 11) cm; (b) 2.57 m
