PSLEBrandon had 3.5 m of rope. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the rope did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of i.
- If i = 10, how much of the rope was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of rope used
= i + i + i + (2i - 4) + (i + 16)
= i + i + i + 2i + i - 4 + 16
= (6 i + 12) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
3.5 m = 350 cm
Total length of rope used if i = 10
= 6 i + 12
= 6(10) + 12
= 60 + 12
= 72 cm
Total length of rope not used
= 350 - 72
= 278 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
278 cm = 2.78 m
Answer(s): (a) (6i + 12) cm; (b) 2.78 m
