PSLEBryan had 2.8 m of rope. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the rope did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of k.
- If k = 11, how much of the rope was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of rope used
= k + k + k + (2k - 10) + (k + 16)
= k + k + k + 2k + k - 10 + 16
= (6 k + 6) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
2.8 m = 280 cm
Total length of rope used if k = 11
= 6 k + 6
= 6(11) + 6
= 66 + 6
= 72 cm
Total length of rope not used
= 280 - 72
= 208 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
208 cm = 2.08 m
Answer(s): (a) (6k + 6) cm; (b) 2.08 m
