PSLEGabriel had 3.5 m of thread. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the thread did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of m.
- If m = 10, how much of the thread was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of thread used
= m + m + m + (3m - 9) + (m + 17)
= m + m + m + 3m + m - 9 + 17
= (7 m + 8) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
3.5 m = 350 cm
Total length of thread used if m = 10
= 7 m + 8
= 7(10) + 8
= 70 + 8
= 78 cm
Total length of thread not used
= 350 - 78
= 272 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
272 cm = 2.72 m
Answer(s): (a) (7m + 8) cm; (b) 2.72 m
