PSLERyan had 3.6 m of thread. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the thread did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of c.
- If c = 11, how much of the thread was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of thread used
= c + c + c + (2c - 9) + (c + 20)
= c + c + c + 2c + c - 9 + 20
= (6 c + 11) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
3.6 m = 360 cm
Total length of thread used if c = 11
= 6 c + 11
= 6(11) + 11
= 66 + 11
= 77 cm
Total length of thread not used
= 360 - 77
= 283 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
283 cm = 2.83 m
Answer(s): (a) (6c + 11) cm; (b) 2.83 m
