PSLELiam had 2.3 m of string. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the string did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of n.
- If n = 10, how much of the string was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of string used
= n + n + n + (3n - 3) + (n + 13)
= n + n + n + 3n + n - 3 + 13
= (7 n + 10) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
2.3 m = 230 cm
Total length of string used if n = 10
= 7 n + 10
= 7(10) + 10
= 70 + 10
= 80 cm
Total length of string not used
= 230 - 80
= 150 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
150 cm = 1.5 m
Answer(s): (a) (7n + 10) cm; (b) 1.5 m
