PSLEGeorge had 3.5 m of thread. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the thread did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of h.
- If h = 22, how much of the thread was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of thread used
= h + h + h + (3h - 4) + (h + 17)
= h + h + h + 3h + h - 4 + 17
= (7 h + 13) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
3.5 m = 350 cm
Total length of thread used if h = 22
= 7 h + 13
= 7(22) + 13
= 154 + 13
= 167 cm
Total length of thread not used
= 350 - 167
= 183 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
183 cm = 1.83 m
Answer(s): (a) (7h + 13) cm; (b) 1.83 m
