PSLEFlynn had 3.1 m of wire. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the wire did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of y.
- If y = 12, how much of the wire was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of wire used
= y + y + y + (2y - 3) + (y + 13)
= y + y + y + 2y + y - 3 + 13
= (6 y + 10) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
3.1 m = 310 cm
Total length of wire used if y = 12
= 6 y + 10
= 6(12) + 10
= 72 + 10
= 82 cm
Total length of wire not used
= 310 - 82
= 228 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
228 cm = 2.28 m
Answer(s): (a) (6y + 10) cm; (b) 2.28 m
