PSLEGabriel had 3.9 m of rope. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the rope did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of i.
- If i = 21, how much of the rope was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of rope used
= i + i + i + (3i - 8) + (i + 17)
= i + i + i + 3i + i - 8 + 17
= (7 i + 9) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
3.9 m = 390 cm
Total length of rope used if i = 21
= 7 i + 9
= 7(21) + 9
= 147 + 9
= 156 cm
Total length of rope not used
= 390 - 156
= 234 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
234 cm = 2.34 m
Answer(s): (a) (7i + 9) cm; (b) 2.34 m
