PSLENick had 2.2 m of rope. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the rope did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of q.
- If q = 15, how much of the rope was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of rope used
= q + q + q + (2q - 5) + (q + 18)
= q + q + q + 2q + q - 5 + 18
= (6 q + 13) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
2.2 m = 220 cm
Total length of rope used if q = 15
= 6 q + 13
= 6(15) + 13
= 90 + 13
= 103 cm
Total length of rope not used
= 220 - 103
= 117 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
117 cm = 1.17 m
Answer(s): (a) (6q + 13) cm; (b) 1.17 m
