PSLELuke had 3.6 m of thread. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the thread did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of y.
- If y = 16, how much of the thread was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of thread used
= y + y + y + (2y - 3) + (y + 13)
= y + y + y + 2y + y - 3 + 13
= (6 y + 10) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
3.6 m = 360 cm
Total length of thread used if y = 16
= 6 y + 10
= 6(16) + 10
= 96 + 10
= 106 cm
Total length of thread not used
= 360 - 106
= 254 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
254 cm = 2.54 m
Answer(s): (a) (6y + 10) cm; (b) 2.54 m
