PSLEHoward had 3.5 m of thread. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the thread did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of d.
- If d = 10, how much of the thread was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of thread used
= d + d + d + (2d - 5) + (d + 15)
= d + d + d + 2d + d - 5 + 15
= (6 d + 10) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
3.5 m = 350 cm
Total length of thread used if d = 10
= 6 d + 10
= 6(10) + 10
= 60 + 10
= 70 cm
Total length of thread not used
= 350 - 70
= 280 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
280 cm = 2.8 m
Answer(s): (a) (6d + 10) cm; (b) 2.8 m
