PSLECaden had 2.4 m of wire. He used some of it to make the figure as shown.
- How much of the wire did Andy use to make the figure? Leave your answer in the simplest form in terms of y.
- If y = 10, how much of the wire was not used to make the figure? Leave your answer in meters.
(a)
Total length of wire used
= y + y + y + (2y - 3) + (y + 19)
= y + y + y + 2y + y - 3 + 19
= (6 y + 16) cm
(b)
1 m = 100 cm
2.4 m = 240 cm
Total length of wire used if y = 10
= 6 y + 16
= 6(10) + 16
= 60 + 16
= 76 cm
Total length of wire not used
= 240 - 76
= 164 cm
1 cm = 0.01 m
164 cm = 1.64 m
Answer(s): (a) (6y + 16) cm; (b) 1.64 m
