The figure shows an empty flower vase of height 47 cm. It is made from 2 containers. The top container is in the form of a cuboid which has a square base side 8 cm and height 31 cm. The bottom container is in the form of a cube of 16 cm. 4.96 litres of water is poured into the empty vase. What is the height of the water level from the base of the vase? (1 litre = 1000 cm³)
Volume of the bottom container
= 16 x 16 x 16
= 4096 cm³

4.96 ℓ = 4960 cm³

Volume of water in the top container
= 4960 - 4096
= 864 cm³ 

Base area of the top container
= 8 x 8
= 64 cm²

Height of water level in the top container
= 864 ÷ 64
= 13.5 cm

Height of water level from the base of vase
= 16 + 13.5
= 29.5 cm
