The figure is not drawn to scale. Tank K and Tank L have base areas of 1500 cm
2 and 1000 cm
2 respectively. Water was poured into an empty rectangular Tank K until it reached a height of 36 cm. Some of the water was then poured from Tank K into Tank L which contained 2.6 ℓ of water until the height of the water in both tanks were the same.
- Find the new height of the water in Tank K.
- How many litres of water were poured into Tank L?
(a)
Volume of water in Tank K
= 1500 x 36
= 54000 cm
3 (Base area x height)
1 ℓ = 1000 cm
3 2.6 ℓ = 2600 cm
3 Total volume of Tank K and Tank L
= 54000 + 2600
= 56600 cm
3 Total base area of Tank K and Tank L
= 1500 + 1000
= 2500 cm²
Height of Tank K after
= 56600 ÷ 2500
= 22.64 cm
(b)
Volume of water in Tank L after pouring
= 1000 x 22.64
= 22640 cm
3 Volume of water poured into Tank L
= 22640 - 1000
= 21640 cm
3 21640 mℓ = 21.64 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 22.64 cm; (b) 21.64 ℓ
