The figure is not drawn to scale. Tank H and Tank J have base areas of 2500 cm
2 and 1000 cm
2 respectively. Water was poured into an empty rectangular Tank H until it reached a height of 21 cm. Some of the water was then poured from Tank H into Tank J which contained 2.1 ℓ of water until the height of the water in both tanks were the same.
- Find the new height of the water in Tank H.
- How many litres of water were poured into Tank J?
(a)
Volume of water in Tank H
= 2500 x 21
= 52500 cm
3 (Base area x height)
1 ℓ = 1000 cm
3 2.1 ℓ = 2100 cm
3 Total volume of Tank H and Tank J
= 52500 + 2100
= 54600 cm
3 Total base area of Tank H and Tank J
= 2500 + 1000
= 3500 cm²
Height of Tank H after
= 54600 ÷ 3500
= 15.6 cm
(b)
Volume of water in Tank J after pouring
= 1000 x 15.6
= 15600 cm
3 Volume of water poured into Tank J
= 15600 - 1000
= 14600 cm
3 14600 mℓ = 14.6 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 15.6 cm; (b) 14.6 ℓ
