The figure is not drawn to scale. Tank B and Tank C have base areas of 1500 cm
2 and 1000 cm
2 respectively. Water was poured into an empty rectangular Tank B until it reached a height of 39 cm. Some of the water was then poured from Tank B into Tank C which contained 2.7 ℓ of water until the height of the water in both tanks were the same.
- Find the new height of the water in Tank B.
- How many litres of water were poured into Tank C?
(a)
Volume of water in Tank B
= 1500 x 39
= 58500 cm
3 (Base area x height)
1 ℓ = 1000 cm
3 2.7 ℓ = 2700 cm
3 Total volume of Tank B and Tank C
= 58500 + 2700
= 61200 cm
3 Total base area of Tank B and Tank C
= 1500 + 1000
= 2500 cm²
Height of Tank B after
= 61200 ÷ 2500
= 24.48 cm
(b)
Volume of water in Tank C after pouring
= 1000 x 24.48
= 24480 cm
3 Volume of water poured into Tank C
= 24480 - 1000
= 23480 cm
3 23480 mℓ = 23.48 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 24.48 cm; (b) 23.48 ℓ
