The figure is not drawn to scale. Container L and Container M have base areas of 4000 cm
2 and 1000 cm
2 respectively. Water was poured into an empty rectangular Container L until it reached a height of 46 cm. Some of the water was then poured from Container L into Container M which contained 2.3 ℓ of water until the height of the water in both containers were the same.
- Find the new height of the water in Container L.
- How many litres of water were poured into Container M?
(a)
Volume of water in Container L
= 4000 x 46
= 184000 cm
3 (Base area x height)
1 ℓ = 1000 cm
3 2.3 ℓ = 2300 cm
3 Total volume of Container L and Container M
= 184000 + 2300
= 186300 cm
3 Total base area of Container L and Container M
= 4000 + 1000
= 5000 cm²
Height of Container L after
= 186300 ÷ 5000
= 37.26 cm
(b)
Volume of water in Container M after pouring
= 1000 x 37.26
= 37260 cm
3 Volume of water poured into Container M
= 37260 - 1000
= 36260 cm
3 36260 mℓ = 36.26 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 37.26 cm; (b) 36.26 ℓ
