The figure is not drawn to scale. Container N and Container P have base areas of 3500 cm
2 and 1500 cm
2 respectively. Water was poured into an empty rectangular Container N until it reached a height of 27 cm. Some of the water was then poured from Container N into Container P which contained 1.5 ℓ of water until the height of the water in both containers were the same.
- Find the new height of the water in Container N.
- How many litres of water were poured into Container P?
(a)
Volume of water in Container N
= 3500 x 27
= 94500 cm
3 (Base area x height)
1 ℓ = 1000 cm
3 1.5 ℓ = 1500 cm
3 Total volume of Container N and Container P
= 94500 + 1500
= 96000 cm
3 Total base area of Container N and Container P
= 3500 + 1500
= 5000 cm²
Height of Container N after
= 96000 ÷ 5000
= 19.2 cm
(b)
Volume of water in Container P after pouring
= 1500 x 19.2
= 28800 cm
3 Volume of water poured into Container P
= 28800 - 1500
= 27300 cm
3 27300 mℓ = 27.3 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 19.2 cm; (b) 27.3 ℓ
