The figure is not drawn to scale. Tank H and Tank J have base areas of 3500 cm
2 and 1500 cm
2 respectively. Water was poured into an empty rectangular Tank H until it reached a height of 35 cm. Some of the water was then poured from Tank H into Tank J which contained 1.4 ℓ of water until the height of the water in both tanks were the same.
- Find the new height of the water in Tank H.
- How many litres of water were poured into Tank J?
(a)
Volume of water in Tank H
= 3500 x 35
= 122500 cm
3 (Base area x height)
1 ℓ = 1000 cm
3 1.4 ℓ = 1400 cm
3 Total volume of Tank H and Tank J
= 122500 + 1400
= 123900 cm
3 Total base area of Tank H and Tank J
= 3500 + 1500
= 5000 cm²
Height of Tank H after
= 123900 ÷ 5000
= 24.78 cm
(b)
Volume of water in Tank J after pouring
= 1500 x 24.78
= 37170 cm
3 Volume of water poured into Tank J
= 37170 - 1500
= 35670 cm
3 35670 mℓ = 35.67 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 24.78 cm; (b) 35.67 ℓ
