The figure is not drawn to scale. Tank T and Tank U have base areas of 3500 cm
2 and 1500 cm
2 respectively. Water was poured into an empty rectangular Tank T until it reached a height of 46 cm. Some of the water was then poured from Tank T into Tank U which contained 1.2 ℓ of water until the height of the water in both tanks were the same.
- Find the new height of the water in Tank T.
- How many litres of water were poured into Tank U?
(a)
Volume of water in Tank T
= 3500 x 46
= 161000 cm
3 (Base area x height)
1 ℓ = 1000 cm
3 1.2 ℓ = 1200 cm
3 Total volume of Tank T and Tank U
= 161000 + 1200
= 162200 cm
3 Total base area of Tank T and Tank U
= 3500 + 1500
= 5000 cm²
Height of Tank T after
= 162200 ÷ 5000
= 32.44 cm
(b)
Volume of water in Tank U after pouring
= 1500 x 32.44
= 48660 cm
3 Volume of water poured into Tank U
= 48660 - 1500
= 47160 cm
3 47160 mℓ = 47.16 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 32.44 cm; (b) 47.16 ℓ
