The figure is not drawn to scale. Container T and Container U have base areas of 3000 cm
2 and 2000 cm
2 respectively. Water was poured into an empty rectangular Container T until it reached a height of 45 cm. Some of the water was then poured from Container T into Container U which contained 2.1 ℓ of water until the height of the water in both containers were the same.
- Find the new height of the water in Container T.
- How many litres of water were poured into Container U?
(a)
Volume of water in Container T
= 3000 x 45
= 135000 cm
3 (Base area x height)
1 ℓ = 1000 cm
3 2.1 ℓ = 2100 cm
3 Total volume of Container T and Container U
= 135000 + 2100
= 137100 cm
3 Total base area of Container T and Container U
= 3000 + 2000
= 5000 cm²
Height of Container T after
= 137100 ÷ 5000
= 27.42 cm
(b)
Volume of water in Container U after pouring
= 2000 x 27.42
= 54840 cm
3 Volume of water poured into Container U
= 54840 - 2000
= 52840 cm
3 52840 mℓ = 52.84 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 27.42 cm; (b) 52.84 ℓ
