The figure is not drawn to scale. Tank L and Tank M have base areas of 3500 cm
2 and 1500 cm
2 respectively. Water was poured into an empty rectangular Tank L until it reached a height of 31 cm. Some of the water was then poured from Tank L into Tank M which contained 2.1 ℓ of water until the height of the water in both tanks were the same.
- Find the new height of the water in Tank L.
- How many litres of water were poured into Tank M?
(a)
Volume of water in Tank L
= 3500 x 31
= 108500 cm
3 (Base area x height)
1 ℓ = 1000 cm
3 2.1 ℓ = 2100 cm
3 Total volume of Tank L and Tank M
= 108500 + 2100
= 110600 cm
3 Total base area of Tank L and Tank M
= 3500 + 1500
= 5000 cm²
Height of Tank L after
= 110600 ÷ 5000
= 22.12 cm
(b)
Volume of water in Tank M after pouring
= 1500 x 22.12
= 33180 cm
3 Volume of water poured into Tank M
= 33180 - 1500
= 31680 cm
3 31680 mℓ = 31.68 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 22.12 cm; (b) 31.68 ℓ
