Mary has two types of jugs, large and small. She filled 4 large jugs and 6 small jugs with 16.9 ℓ of the coffee she has. With the remaining coffee, she could not fill another large jug as she was short of 0.2 ℓ. Thus, she filled another small jug and had 0.7 ℓ left over.

1. How many litres of coffee did a large jug hold more than a small jug?
2. How many litres of coffee did a small jug hold?

(a)
Difference between the capacity of the small jug and the large jug
= 0.7 + 0.2 
= 0.9 ℓ

(b)
Volume of 1 small jug = 1 u
Volume of 6 small jugs = 6 u

Volume of 1 large jug = 1 u + 0.9
Volume of 4 large jugs = 4(1 u + 0.9) = 4 u + 3.6 

Total volume of 6 small jugs and 4 large jugs
= 4 u + 3.6 + 6 u
= 10 u + 3.6

10 u + 3.6 = 16.9
10 u = 16.9 - 3.6 
10 u = 13.3

1 u = 13.3 ÷ 10 = 1.33

Volume of a small jug 
= 1 u
= 1.33 ℓ
