PSLEFiona has two types of flasks, large and small. She filled 2 large flasks and 8 small flasks with 12.9 ℓ of the coffee she has. With the remaining coffee, she could not fill another large flask as she was short of 0.3 ℓ. Thus, she filled another small flask and had 0.7 ℓ left over.
- How many litres of coffee did a large flask hold more than a small flask?
- How many litres of coffee did a small flask hold?
(a)
Difference between the capacity of the small flask and the large flask
= 0.7 + 0.3
= 1 ℓ
(b)
Volume of 1 small flask = 1 u
Volume of 8 small flasks = 8 u
Volume of 1 large flask = 1 u + 1
Volume of 2 large flasks = 2(1 u + 1) = 2 u + 2
Total volume of 8 small flasks and 2 large flasks
= 2 u + 2 + 8 u
= 10 u + 2
10 u + 2 = 12.9
10 u = 12.9 - 2
10 u = 10.9
1 u = 10.9 ÷ 10 = 1.09
Volume of a small flask
= 1 u
= 1.09 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1 ℓ; (b) 1.09 ℓ
