Marion has two types of pitchers, large and small. She filled 4 large pitchers and 6 small pitchers with 17.7 ℓ of the tea she has. With the remaining tea, she could not fill another large pitcher as she was short of 0.2 ℓ. Thus, she filled another small pitcher and had 0.6 ℓ left over.

1. How many litres of tea did a large pitcher hold more than a small pitcher?
2. How many litres of tea did a small pitcher hold?

(a)
Difference between the capacity of the small pitcher and the large pitcher
= 0.6 + 0.2 
= 0.8 ℓ

(b)
Volume of 1 small pitcher = 1 u
Volume of 6 small pitchers = 6 u

Volume of 1 large pitcher = 1 u + 0.8
Volume of 4 large pitchers = 4(1 u + 0.8) = 4 u + 3.2 

Total volume of 6 small pitchers and 4 large pitchers
= 4 u + 3.2 + 6 u
= 10 u + 3.2

10 u + 3.2 = 17.7
10 u = 17.7 - 3.2 
10 u = 14.5

1 u = 14.5 ÷ 10 = 1.45

Volume of a small pitcher 
= 1 u
= 1.45 ℓ
