An open tank of depth 15 cm has a horizontal base of length 30 cm and breadth 20 cm. Two wooden cubes, of side 2 cm and 3 cm respectively, rest on the base of the tank.
- Find the capacity of the tank.
- How much water must be poured into the tank so that the tank is half filled?
(a)
Capacity of the tank
= 30 x 20 x 15
= 9000 cm
3 (b)
Volume of water needed so that the tank is half filled
= 9000 ÷ 2
= 4500 cm
3 Volume of 2-cm cube
= 2 x 2 x 2
= 8 cm
3 Volume of 3-cm cube
= 3 x 3 x 3
= 27 cm
3 Total volume of the 2 cubes
= 8 + 27
= 35 cm
3
Amount of water to be poured into the tank so that it is half filled
= 4500 - 35
= 4465 cm
3 Answer(s): (a) 9000 cm
3; (b) 4465 cm
