An open tank of depth 15 cm has a horizontal base of length 40 cm and breadth 25 cm. Two wooden cubes, of side 5 cm and 7 cm respectively, rest on the base of the tank.
- Find the capacity of the tank.
- How much water must be poured into the tank so that the tank is half filled?
(a)
Capacity of the tank
= 40 x 25 x 15
= 15000 cm
3 (b)
Volume of water needed so that the tank is half filled
= 15000 ÷ 2
= 7500 cm
3 Volume of 5-cm cube
= 5 x 5 x 5
= 125 cm
3 Volume of 7-cm cube
= 7 x 7 x 7
= 343 cm
3 Total volume of the 2 cubes
= 125 + 343
= 468 cm
3
Amount of water to be poured into the tank so that it is half filled
= 7500 - 468
= 7032 cm
3 Answer(s): (a) 15000 cm
3; (b) 7032 cm
