An open tank of depth 15 cm has a horizontal base of length 25 cm and breadth 20 cm. Two wooden cubes, of side 5 cm and 6 cm respectively, rest on the base of the tank.
- Find the capacity of the tank.
- How much water must be poured into the tank so that the tank is half filled?
(a)
Capacity of the tank
= 25 x 20 x 15
= 7500 cm
3 (b)
Volume of water needed so that the tank is half filled
= 7500 ÷ 2
= 3750 cm
3 Volume of 5-cm cube
= 5 x 5 x 5
= 125 cm
3 Volume of 6-cm cube
= 6 x 6 x 6
= 216 cm
3 Total volume of the 2 cubes
= 125 + 216
= 341 cm
3
Amount of water to be poured into the tank so that it is half filled
= 3750 - 341
= 3409 cm
3 Answer(s): (a) 7500 cm
3; (b) 3409 cm
