A rectangular tank measuring 60 cm by 51 cm by 42 cm was filled with water to a height of 30 cm at first. After 9 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 32 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 32 - 30
= 2 cm
Total volume of water added
= 51 x 60 x 2
= 6120 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 6120 ÷ 9
= 680 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 9 jugs of water were poured in
= 42 - 32
= 10 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 51 x 60 x 10
= 30600 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
30600 cm
3 = 30.6 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 680 cm
3; (b) 30.6 ℓ
