A rectangular tank measuring 56 cm by 45 cm by 41 cm was filled with water to a height of 24 cm at first. After 8 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 34 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 34 - 24
= 10 cm
Total volume of water added
= 45 x 56 x 10
= 25200 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 25200 ÷ 8
= 3150 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 8 jugs of water were poured in
= 41 - 34
= 7 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 45 x 56 x 7
= 17640 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
17640 cm
3 = 17.64 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 3150 cm
3; (b) 17.64 ℓ
