A rectangular tank measuring 57 cm by 51 cm by 36 cm was filled with water to a height of 24 cm at first. After 9 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 31 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 31 - 24
= 7 cm
Total volume of water added
= 51 x 57 x 7
= 20349 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 20349 ÷ 9
= 2261 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 9 jugs of water were poured in
= 36 - 31
= 5 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 51 x 57 x 5
= 14535 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
14535 cm
3 = 14.535 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 2261 cm
3; (b) 14.535 ℓ
