A rectangular tank measuring 55 cm by 54 cm by 40 cm was filled with water to a height of 30 cm at first. After 8 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 34 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 34 - 30
= 4 cm
Total volume of water added
= 54 x 55 x 4
= 11880 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 11880 ÷ 8
= 1485 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 8 jugs of water were poured in
= 40 - 34
= 6 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 54 x 55 x 6
= 17820 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
17820 cm
3 = 17.82 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1485 cm
3; (b) 17.82 ℓ
