A rectangular tank measuring 58 cm by 54 cm by 39 cm was filled with water to a height of 27 cm at first. After 6 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 34 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 34 - 27
= 7 cm
Total volume of water added
= 54 x 58 x 7
= 21924 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 21924 ÷ 6
= 3654 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 6 jugs of water were poured in
= 39 - 34
= 5 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 54 x 58 x 5
= 15660 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
15660 cm
3 = 15.66 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 3654 cm
3; (b) 15.66 ℓ
