A rectangular tank measuring 59 cm by 46 cm by 36 cm was filled with water to a height of 26 cm at first. After 7 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 33 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 33 - 26
= 7 cm
Total volume of water added
= 46 x 59 x 7
= 18998 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 18998 ÷ 7
= 2714 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 7 jugs of water were poured in
= 36 - 33
= 3 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 46 x 59 x 3
= 8142 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
8142 cm
3 = 8.142 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 2714 cm
3; (b) 8.142 ℓ
