A rectangular tank measuring 61 cm by 46 cm by 37 cm was filled with water to a height of 27 cm at first. After 6 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 33 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 33 - 27
= 6 cm
Total volume of water added
= 46 x 61 x 6
= 16836 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 16836 ÷ 6
= 2806 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 6 jugs of water were poured in
= 37 - 33
= 4 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 46 x 61 x 4
= 11224 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
11224 cm
3 = 11.224 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 2806 cm
3; (b) 11.224 ℓ
